Mission:
The Inner Flame
Location: USS Capernum
Timeline: Current
ON:
Having received the word that the USS Capernum would be undergoing a serious upgrade to its warp drive, Lt. JG T'Pri set to work. Gathering her department together, all of them in the main lab, she informed them of the coming upgrades. This meant that everything organic needed to be removed from the Science department, catalogued, and then put into storage. If anything required stasis then those items would be seen to first and readied for transport to an M-69 cargo bay designated for Capernum. After the departmental needs were seen to, T'Pri informed her people that they would also need to see to their own quarters, anything organic in nature needing to be removed or it would be destroyed by the baryon sweep.
A baryon sweep was a procedure used to eliminate baryon particles from a starship. The baryons accumulated as a natural side-effect of warp travel and generally needed to be removed every five years to keep harmful radiation from building up.
The sweep could be accomplished at specialized space stations, with Captain Kingston's facility being one such station. The sweep was green in color and resembled a force field, capable of passing through solid matter. The strength of the sweep could be adjusted and made more effective for a ship which had made heavy use of its warp drive. The sweep was deadly to organic matter, and all lifeforms aboard a ship were evacuated to a safe location before the sweep was initiated. Additionally, the sweep could be damaging to certain areas such as the bridge and computer core, so field diverters could be installed in order to deflect the sweep and protect the sensitive equipment. Once the diverters were installed and the crew evacuated, an auto shutdown sequence was initiated, the ship powered down, and the sweep began. The sweep took a few hours to complete and was generally conducted from stern to bow.
The Science department would see to placing the field diverters as it was their responsibility to see to the computer core and other vital ship areas requiring computer access and sensors input. As always, T'Pri found her people to be most agreeable and to be dedicated to everything they did, no matter how minor the work they were doing. If she allowed herself an ego, T'Pri could very well say that she was proud, very proud, of her officers. As a follower of Jarok, she did have a smidge of pride for them, but one would never know it as she maintained her discipline. Her next destination would be Sickbay, as they were sciences, as well. There, T'Pri would offer to assist with anything they needed, and being a friend of Doctor Loewen, she would find it pleasing to aid the mother-to-be. Any of her officers willing to volunteer to assist would receive an efficiency mark in their personnel files, allowing the 'E' ribbon to be worn on their dress uniforms. Not quite as worthy as a commendation, but worthy nonetheless. Releasing her people to get started, T'Pri decided to head to the Bridge and begin setting up the field diverters.
