< Primary Sickbay >

Doctor Williams was just finishing up with a patient when the Triage Nurse hustled in with a patient on a gurney "Doctor Williams I have a young woman, late twenties, with multiple contusions, and a few cracked ribs" she explained as she reached the Doctor.

Looking at the young woman "What happened to her" Williams inquired as he motioned for his Head Nurse to join them.

"She says she was jumped while walking through the Promenade and robbed. Apparently she resisted her assailant and he threw her to the floor then proceeded to kick her in the ribs. She tried to defend herself as there are defensive wounds on her hands. I've already notified Base Security and they're investigating" the Triage Nurse explained as they moved her to a bio-bed.

"That is a horrible thing to happen to this woman. Thank you Nurse we will take it from here," Williams responded, already having grabbed his scanner "Hello, I am Doctor Williams, the CMO; you are safe now, and we will take good care of you. Can you tell me your name Ensign."

With a low and quivering voice, "I'm Ensign Mary Adams", she stated with a fearful look in her eyes.

Seeing this woman's mental state Heidi smiled "I'm Nurse Stone and you're in good hands here; Doctor Williams is an excellent physician."

"I want to scan you to see where the injuries are located.....is that alright with you" Ramvek inquired still wearing a smile.

Mary nodded yes but when Ramvek started to come close to her she recoiled trying to get away from him "Ensign I am not going to hurt you.....I can assure you you are safe here. May I proceed?"

By this time the woman was literally shaking as she lay on the bio-bed. Williams knew this approach was not going to be successful "Nurse Stone perhaps you should do the examination" as he looked towards Mary "Is that acceptable to you?"

Mary nodded yes. Nurse Stone grabbed the scanner from Williams then started the examination. Ramvek leaned in towards Heidi "I'll be right back" as he exited primary sickbay.

< Counseling Area >

Williams knew Isabelle had the day off, but he wanted to get a Counselor involved sooner rather than later. Walking a short distance down the corridor, he came to the Counselling area. Walking in, he saw a woman dressed in science teal whom he didn't recognise. As he approached her, he said, "Counsellor, I do not believe we have met yet. I am Doctor Ramvek Williams, the CMO for the Base.

" Hello, Doctor. I'm Lieutenant Lireh Vin. I'm one of the new Counsellors who have recently been assigned here. How can I be of assistance to you?" Vin asked.

"Very nice to meet you, Lieutenant" Williams responded with a smile "We have a young woman in her twenties who was assaulted while on the Promenade. While we can treat her physically, my concern is her mental state. When I went to examine her, she recoiled away from me and was shaking, so I had my Head Nurse do the examination. I would like to have a Counselor involved sooner rather than later, so that is where you come in."

"She had an extremely traumatic experience. I am assuming that the assailant was male, based on her recoil from you trying to help. After you heal her injuries, she will need counselling to deal with her ordeal. After her treatment and after she has had a rest, would you like me to come visit her?"

"Yes, that would seem like the logical approach. We will keep her overnight for observations and sedate her if needed. Tomorrow would be a good time to stop by, and you can assess her mental state for yourself," Williams suggested, pleased with the Counselor's willingness to help.

"Agreed. Sedation only if necessary, of course; perhaps instead try something that has a more calming effect. I wouldn't wish to tell you how to do your job, Doctor, but her mental state and the assailant being a man, sedation may not be a good idea."

"Understood Counselor. When it comes to a patients mental state I will defer to your good judgement" Ramvek responded "By the way the patients name is Ensign Mary Adams; thought that might be helpful" as he smirked.

" I've made a mental note. I will be ready when you need me, Doctor."

"Excellent Counselor, I will contact you tomorrow mid morning" as Doctor Williams turned and left to get back to his patients.

< Next Morning Primary Sickbay >

Nurse Stone walked over to Mary "So how are you feeling this morning Ensign" Heidi inquired with a smile.

"Better than I did yesterday" she responds with a light chuckle.

"I see you have a sense of humor this morning so that's a good sign. Doctor Williams will be in shortly to check on you if you're alright with that" Stone explained hoping she was a little more at ease today.

"Yes that would be fine and I owe the Doctor an apology for the way I acted yesterday" she commented feeling a little embarrass at her actions.

"Don't beat yourself up for yesterday; you were in shock from your incident" Heidi stated "Let's get you some breakfast."

"I'd like that." Shortly another Nurse brought Mary a meal fit for a queen.

Shortly Doctor Williams walked in not quite sure how the Ensign would react to his presence "Good morning Ensign Adams and how are you feeling today."

"Like I told Nurse Stone much better than I did yesterday."

"That is good to hear Mary. Would you mind if I scanned you to see for myself" Williams inquired as she nodded yes.

Taking the scanning device Ramvek went over her body from head to toe noticing she was more at ease in his presence "You are healing quite nicely. I have contacted a Counselor to come in and talk with you; I am a little concerned with your mental state after going through the ordeal you went through....if that is fine with you."

"Ok. I guess.....maybe I should talk to someone about what happened yesterday" Mary replied thinking she probably should.

About an hour later Williams tapped his comm "Lieutenant Vin, Williams here, feel free to drop by Sickbay to speak with Ensign Adams" he commented.

Vin tapped her comm. "On my way."

A short time later, Vin arrived in sickbay. She slowly approached the biobed where Ensign Adams, who appeared awake but somewhat dozy, was lying comfortably.

Adams noticed her. Vin paused. " Hello, Ensign. I'm Lieutenant Lireh Vin; I'm one of the Counsellors. I thought you might want some company and maybe someone to talk to."

"Hi, Counsellor, and yes, some company would be nice", she said, lowering her voice "I'm kind of bored just laying here" Mary paused "Doctor Williams suggested that I talk with you."

Lireh approached; she pulled up a chair next to the biobed.

"I'm a terrible patient when it comes to sickbay. I know I should focus on getting well, but my primary aim is to get out of there asap." She said with a smile.

"I understand that security is working to apprehend the man who assaulted you on the promenade. He will be dealt with. If you want to talk about it, I'm here, but only if you feel up to it. Or we can just chat."

Letting out a long sigh "Ya, I guess I should talk about it......maybe that would help since last night I had bad dreams" as she paused a moment "I never realised just how helpless you could feel in that sort of situation.....quite frankly, it scared the crap out of me....how could someone be so cruel" as tears welled up in her eyes.

"That is something about this world we live in and some of the people in it; we simply can't sugarcoat it."

She reached out a hand and placed it on Mary's.

"It simply should not have happened in a civilised society as ours, but it does. It may take a while, but you will get through this, and I am here to help you."

A faint smile came across Mary's face "Thank you for being so kind and understanding; I really appreciate having someone to talk to about this.....now if I could only get out of here, that would make me happy."

As Mary finished her sentence Doctor Williams walked over "How we doing ladies" then turning his attention to his patient "After you finish talking to the Counselor, and there is no hurry, you are free to go but take tomorrow to rest then you can resume your duties the following day; however if anything pops up physically please do not hesitate to come back" Williams explained with a smile.

"Thank you for being such a good doctor, and please tell Nurse Stone thank you as well; she's very nice", Mary responded.

"Thank you, and I will convey your thoughts to her. So when you are ready, you may leave." Ramvek turned his attention elsewhere "Counsellor, thank you for your help, and please do not feel you have to leave yet."

"Yes, please stay and talk a little longer if you have the time", Mary replied, starting to feel much better.

"I'd be happy to stay longer. What do you fancy talking about?" Vin smiled.

Thinking for a few moments, "I'm not sure; maybe tell me a little bit about yourself since I've never seen you aboard before...that is, if you'd like", Mary responded, sporting a much better smile.

"Sure. Well, I am Lireh, from Trill, and I am the current host of the symbiont called Vin. I'm the fourth host, in fact. I am new to Starbase M-69; I am still getting my bearings."

"Tell me about it. This place so much much bigger than the old one; I'm constantly getting turned around. Good thing I carry my PaDD wherever I go" Mary replied while looking at the Counselor for a moment "Your markings suit you. What's Trill like; I've never been there."

Vin ran her finger over the markings on her face. " A Trill's spots are like fingerprints, no Trill has exactly the same pattern. As for what Trill is like, well, I'm biased of course, but very beautiful, steeped in history. The climate is similar to Earth but a little warmer in spring and summer and colder in autumn and winter. "

"That makes sense about your markings; you certainly wouldn't look like someone else" as she giggled "I'd like the warmer aspect but not the colder. Mary commented. The two sat and talked for some time longer.
