Capernum: Meeting Grandma

Posted on Fri Apr 11th, 2025 @ 12:36am by Captain Rogue "Ro" Green {Meji Master} {Flt. Cpt.} & Lieutenant Griffon Resch

Mission: CAPERNUM: {CD&MISSION} On Duty
Location: USS Capernum
Timeline: Current

ON:

Captain Ro Green sat behind her Ready Room desk as she was reading over the reports for the last 24 hours. Everyone had said yes to the move, so Nazgul would be an empty shell by the time the mobile drydock arrived. Which was fine since they were bringing a skeleton crew to man the vessel while it was locked inside the drydock superstructure to keep tabs on systems during transit back to Earth. Satisfied with how things were going, Green leaned back in her chair as she lightly chewed on the end of a stylus in thought. Today, Captain Rogue had decided to don her Meji duds (Pic in bio), something she had contemplated for the past few hours. The crew would know, soon enough, who was Meji endowed with the mystical energy field they called the Force. Other members who were Starfleet, the mundane members, could wear a small chest pin denoting their allegiance and belief in the Meji way of life. From what she was able to gather, talking with Sheyla, the Meji doctrines were being well-read across the Federation, with many interested parties. Part of Capernum's mission was to locate, and claim, an M-class planet to establish their seat of power. Once all this Nazgul business was finished, and after talking with her friend Sureth, then the USS Capernum would begin patrols and exploration out here on the fringe, looking for that perfect world. Ro honestly did not care if there were others there first, as long as they agreed to leave the Meji to themselves and allow them to develop their colony their way. Her chime sounded so Green sat up and looked to the door. "Enter."

Griffon Resch came sauntering in, and right behind him he had a woman with him. Green, at first, merely glanced at her. As her eyes made to move back to Mister Resch, they darted back to the woman. Alarms went off in her mind as a clear, concise memory came to the forefront. She had seen this face many times as a child, the holograms her mother kept being toted around in a modern version of a steamer trunk. She remembered sitting for hours listening to her mother go on and on about the family, its history, who married who and who had created new branches of bloodline. Without meaning to, in a quiet voice but loud enough to be heard, Green popped off even as her eyes maintained their amazed expression. "No fuckin' way."

Both Resch and Cavender stopped at the appropriate spot, both looking at the Captain with bemused expressions of their own.

"Pardon, Captain?" Resch broke the silence which seemed to have lasted for hours when it had only been a few moments.

Green, mentally shaking off her freeze mode, came around the desk to come up on Cavender first. "You're Rachel Cavender, correct? Chief Engineer on the NX-22 Malta?"

Cavender looked over at Resch a moment, her eyes somewhat worried at the sudden interest of his CO. Her face came back to look at Ro. "Yes, Captain Green. That's correct."

"You had a daughter named Anita, right?" Another odd question for this moment of introduction, with Green feeling that everything she was wondering about this woman was 100% correct. The Force was telling her so.

"How do you know about my daughter?" Rachel asked, taken aback that the woman knew that much about her private life.

Green finally broke into a smile, then gave a nervous giggle. "Rachel Cavender you need to know something. It's important for your well being. You are my great grandmother. Anita was one of my grandmothers. My mother married her son."

Cavender's expression changed dramatically in those few moments of explanation. "So, Anita did have children?! Awesome!" Cavender stood in place and clapped her hands excitedly. "So glad to hear that my MIA didn't keep her from living her life."

Griffon stood to the side and watched the interplay. He found it fascinating that the one survivor of her ship just so happened to be the grandmother of his Captain. The two women went back and forth as Rachel asked family questions and Green answered them as best she could, before further explaining that her parents had been killed by raiders and that she had been raised by Admiral Stone, as his daughter. When a break in the topic came up, Resch cleared his throat. "Pardon the interruption, ladies. Captain, Commander Cavender was wondering if she could have access to main engineering. She has a lot of catching up to do..."

"Of course she can," Green answered, her smile not diminishing in the least. "Also, as in your time, Rachel, the computer library is full of data for all to read. Mister Resch, as per his position, will keep an eye on what you are reading. Not that we don't trust you but it is protocol."

"Understood, Captain." Cavender suddenly giggled. "I'm calling my grand baby 'Captain' and 'sir'. What a life, eh?" All of them chuckled at that.

Green's face began to mellow back to normal for the next round of conversation. "Are there any other survivors?" Resch and Cavender shook their heads no.

"Well, except one," Griffon offered after a moment of silence. "Rachel's cat, Tubby, also survived. He's in her quarters. I put her up in Loewen's FC Chief quarters since he is sharing quarters with Doctor Holbrook."

"Good idea." Green's eyes kept going back and forth between the two as she talked. "Puts you on the same deck as most of my staff. Any questions, just go next door and knock. Sean finally took the plunge? Nice."

"Yep," Resch said, grinning. "He's spoken for now. At least we know who his primary physician is if he ever needs medical aid." A chuckle came forth.

Cavender began to move around the Ready Room as the other two spoke. Her eyes took in all the nick-nacks and souvenirs that Captain Green had on shelves and tables. It was obvious that her granddaughter had had quite a colorful career and had to many worlds in her travels. "A fish tank? Damn, you people got it easy compared to my time." She bent at the waist, looking within the tank, seeing nothing alive in there. "No fish? Not my favorite pet either. Can't take a fish for a walk or have it tear up your favorite slippers."

The other two laughed at that, even as Resch had his PADD out and gave permission for Cavender to access all departments without announcement except for Intelligence, and Strategic Operations. Everyone had to ask them, except himself, before just waltzing in. Green got them moving, the three of them leaving the Bridge to walk the ship and to catch up. Cavender needed to know that her family had done well, and there were many in the bloodline still out there even if most of them did not know each other as family.
