The evening after the yacht returned from Vulcan Sureth found his First Officer Captain Shauna Callaghan.
" Shauna have you met General Shaw yet? I was informed he arrived earlier today.
“I haven’t seen any sign of him Sir” Shauna shook her head. “I thought perhaps he was waiting for you to return.”
" Well I am going down there. GENERAL or not I want to know what the marines are doing on this base. Lt Commander Wallace warned us. How did the arrival of our newest ship go? When it is fully operational we will have to criston it Number One. Come with me and let's meet this General. There is strength in numbers." Sureth replied.
“Our new ship arrived, but I was side tracked by a problem with the gravity systems onboard. It seemed there was a temporal anomaly somewhere nearby that was disrupting the station. I had to temporarily shutdown all arrivals, but it seems to have dissipated at the moment.”
" Let's dispatch a probe to follow up. This General Shaw is somewhat of a silent soldier. A marine fighter pilot legend they say." Sureth added.
Shauna nodded. “He sounds interesting, perhaps it will benefit the station having him here. No doubt we’ll soon find out.”
Sureth stood with Captain Callaghan about to talk to a new general but his mind reflected back to Isabella and their meld.
“Is everything alright Sir?” Shauna looked at Sureth noting he seemed distracted.
" Just lag. The trip was long from Vulcan. "
Shauna nodded. “Of course Sir, if you’d like to rest I’m sure I can manage here.”
" No let's meet this guy." Sureth replied.
==The General==
Sureth entered the General's office first, announced his name to a corporal at the door and then entered.
" Commodore Sureth and Captain Shauna Callaghan thank you for dropping by. General Liam Shaw at your service. "
" General Shaw I was not aware of your coming but since you are welcome to Starbase M-69. I am...."
Shaw interjected " Commodore I know who you are and your roles. I assure you I am not here to take your command. Actually I am here to enhance it. There are major security issues I want to discuss with you and your security chief."
“May I ask General, what security issues are you most worried about?” Shauna looked at Shaw curiously.
" Captain I used a stealth shuttle to board this station and no one was aware. That is a Starfleet security issue we will fix. As we speak a vessel will soon deliver two companies of Marines . Each marine has a specific set of skills and will shadow your OPS staff to learn bridge systems. Those orders come from the Federation Council." Shaw replied.
“So once they’ve learned everything they need to know will they be taking over the running of the station?” Shauna gave Shaw a critical look.
" Captain this is still a Starfleet base for now. However should this become a military matter I am prepared to assume command of this post." Shaw replied.
Shauna nodded. “In that case let’s not make it a military matter.” She offered a polite smile. “What do you suggest to combat an enemy with stealth technology? It’s not like we have specialist equipment here.”
" Your research and development department should stay busy then." Shaw answered.
" This is a Federation Starbase General Shaw. As such I am compliant to host a marine deployment. I will remain at my post until properly relieved." Sureth replied.
" I hope it doesn't change Commodore Sureth. With the threats of the Essary and now Klingon ships in an adjoining sector you had better open your eyes to the threats out there." Shaw replied.
"We have our eyes wide open General, we have since before we moved the station here." Shauna offered a polite smile. "Please ensure the marines don't hinder any of the crew while they're working, I don't want any complaints."
Then Liam stood up and walked around to the other side of his desk.
" You will never know they are here Captain Callaghan."
Sureth raised an eyebrow at Shaw's reply but said nothing. This had already taken longer than it should have Sureth decided.
“Fair enough” Shauna nodded. “In that case perhaps we should get back to work?”
" Good day General Shaw." Sureth added.
" Let's hope so Commodore."
