NAZGUL #22: A Strange Blip

Posted on Tue Jan 14th, 2025 @ 12:40am by Commander Sean Loewen & Lieutenant Commander Sheyla {MD}

Mission: NAZGUL: {CD&MISSION} Return to Basics
Location: USS NAZGUL
Timeline: Current

ON:

Sheyla had received word that Griffon was looking for her assistance in an investigation that interested both of their departments. Not knowing what it was about since Resch did not go into details in text, Sheyla stood up from the conn on the Bridge, and just as her tush had airlifted off of the captain's seat cushion the Tactical officer on duty spoke up.

"Lieutenant Sheyla, our long range sensors picked up a blip briefly on sensors, but then it disappeared. I am scanning as far as I can from out current position, but it was at extreme range."

Sheyla had moved from the command dais to Tactical, looking over the man's shoulder slightly as she leaned in with one hand on the headrest of his chair. "Nothing further? I know it's hard to tell, but just maybe?"

"Sorry, Number One," the junior officer said. "Even though we're orbiting M-69 out near to the outer markers, whatever that was was still out there quite a distance."

"Hmm." Sheyla stood up straight and folded her arms over her torso, her right hand coming up to rub her chin in thought even as her antennae stood up straight and weaved side to side a bit. "Was it near to any of the anomalies?"

"Far closer to them than we are, yes." He pointed to a screen. "This is a volatile area of ion storm activity. All civilian traffic has been warned to steer clear of the area, even if they come in from that direction. Give it a wide berth, they've been told."

Sheyla's eyes watched that particular screen for about ten seconds, her mind still playing with what she had been told so far. As Number One it was her duty to alert the captain if she found anything odd, or suspicious about anything around the ship. This event was both odd and suspicious. Odd due to the warnings by Starfleet to ships, with warning bouys out around that volatile section of space. However, there were Klingons in this region, and they may be doing some kind of maneuvers and using cloaks for war games. The other alternative; it was someone completely different. Someone either in trouble, or with cloaking technology. "Good job, Ensign. I'll let the Captain know. Continue your scans, please."

"Aye, Sir."

Moving away from the tactical and into the open area near to the starboard lift, Sheyla tapped her combadge. "Sheyla to Captain."

Loewen's voice came through the speakers. "Go ahead, Number One."

"Tactical detected what appeared to be a blip for a starship. It was very brief and has disappeared. Despite further scans it has not been re-acquired, Sir. And, it was spotted at extreme sensor range." Sheyla waited patiently, now facing the forward Bridge and looking out the panoramic forward viewport. Several freighters and transports could be seen dropping from warp at the outer markers and then making their way towards M-69. If the base needed aid with any of them, they would call for assistance. So far, Nazgul had not been necessary so it continued to plow through space at half impulse and run scanning patterns.

"On my way," Loewen responded, the channel cutting as he had obviously tapped his badge off. Within a minute he was on the Bridge, his eyes a tad bloodshot from all the reading he had been doing. He came in next to Sheyla. "You think there may be a problem, Number One?"

Sheyla gave him a nod, and a bit of a sheepish expression. "I'm Andorian, Captain. After the most recent assault on 69, everything odd is considered a possible threat."

"I hear you." Sean said this and then walked over to Tactical. He conferred with the officer there and the same screen Sheyla had looked at was pointed out, even with the Ensign bringing up the log recording of what he had spotted. "Make note of it, Ensign, for each shift. Tell them to keep scanning that area intermittently." Loewen half turned from tactical to look towards the Helm/Ops consoles. "Helm, keep us on this side of M-69. Also, get us closer to the marker line. We'll scan those for posterity even as we make sure there are no surprises out there." The Helm responded, acknowledging the orders and putting them in action.

"It's late, Sheyla." Sean said, returning to address his XO face to face. "Let's all sleep on this and rehash it in the morning. Agreed?"

"Agreed, Sir."

"Good." Loewen gave a tired grin and squeezed her upper arm as a friend. "I'm going to nap in the Ready Room. I have more that needs to be done before the reins are completely mine. Carry on, people." He left the Bridge, a bit miffed that his date with Len would have to be postponed. Sean hoped a rain check would suffice.
