< Peel >
The Ship was slip streaming back towards M-69 when tactical called out "Captain I'm picking up some sort of anomaly on long range sensors; might I suggest dropping out of slipstream until we know what it is for sure" Lieutenant SanChez informed command with some concern "Lieutenant Sayvek can you confirm."
Hearing SanChez, the Captain wasn't able to respond before Helm called out "Sir we've dropped out of slipstream" Hanes stated a little concerned as to the reason before Science chimed in.
" Sir we appear to have hit an unknown gravity node. It affected the subspsce receiver dropping us out of slipstream. " Sayvek replied.
With everything going on all to once O'Connell gave an order "Helm full stop and hold our current position until we can get this figured out. "Computer why were we dropped out of slipstream."
"Traveling past the gravity node while in slipstream would have had devastating consequences for both the Ship and Crew" the Computer answered the inquiry.
As O'Connell returned to his seat "Mr. Sayvek we need to know everything we can about this node. Initiate a full scan; we need to figure out how to get around this thing safely" he ordered with some concern.
" I will run more scans and theoretical conjectures. " Sayvek replied.
Looking towards Devroe "Commander any thoughts on the situation" O'Connell inquired pleased that Angel was still aboard; at least for the time being.
Thinking for a few moments "Let's see what the Lieutenant is able to find out before we jump to any conclusions" Devroe replied very curious to what the anomaly really was.
“I can’t say I’ve ever heard about anything like this before” Sarissa added as she looked towards O’Connell. “What is a gravity node?”
"If I remember the theory classes from my Academy days, I believe it's an area of immense gravitational pull. The fact the Computer dropped us from slipstream leads me to believe traveling by it at those speeds might only intensify its pull. Now we just need to figure out to get out of this thing" O'Connell explained then had a thought "You're not feeling any sense of a sentient being within the node are you."
Sarissa paused to let her senses reach out. “To be honest I’m not sure what I’m sensing. There could be something, but I’m not sure.”
Sayvek quickly turned and made an announcement. " Captain I am detecting an object directly behind us. It was too small to detect until we came to a stop. It is transmitting a signal that appears to be a...Borg sphere that was caught in what ever trapped us."
“Borg!?” Sarissa gave Jamie a horrified look.
"Counselor I understand your concern given your past experiences but rest assured we will do our best to keep you safe" Jamie replied trying to make Sarissa feel better.
" They appear to have been trapped by this and their ship is now stripped and laid dorment." Sayvek replied.
Hearing Sayvek O'Connell thought to himself "Bloody Hell!!" as he pondered their next move "We certainly don't need to tangle with any Borg. Lieutenant Sayvek are you detecting any life signs aboard."
" No signs of life and no oxygen nitrogen atmosphere. It is dead in space." Sayvek replied.
Think for a few moments "Since I doubt any of us wants to end up like the Borg in that sphere, I'm open to suggestions on how to get us out of this gravity node" O'Connell stated before tapping his Comm "Lieutenant Flannery please report to the Bridge at once."
"On my way Captain" Marcus replied as he grabbed his PaDD and was off. Minutes later Flannery stepped off the Lift "You wanted to see me Captain."
"Yes. Between all of us we need ideas for breaking free of this gravity node" the Captain replied "Ok people what say you."
Sayvek pondered and then spoke up. " What if this is a trap? Perhaps some group or force has created this node to catch unsuspecting travelers?"
"That's a valid point but we still need to break free none the less" O'Connell replied as several thoughts went through his mind.
The Flannery spoke up "We might be able to send a beam of antimatter through the main deflector dish, that would theoretically propel in the opposite direction and free us from this node" Marcus explained.
"That's one avenue but we'll have to make sure the Ship is in the correct direction or that could propel us further into this blasted thing" O'Connell stated with some concern over the plan.
"Captain even though this has a hold on the Ship would it be possible to use maneuvering thrusters to make sure we're in the correct position before sending an antimatter surge into the node" Devroe inquired looking for any way to ensure a greater rate of success.
Hearing the conversation Helm spoke up facing command "Captain I should be able to use the thrusters to turn us to the proper heading before the deflector dish is used" then he paused thinking "Sir I may be able to engage reverse thrusters at the same time and break us free from the node; as soon as we're free I'll go to warp briefly to propel us away from this thing."
" Captain this may be moot. I am scanning a vessel heading this way. It could be our captors. " Sayvek reported.
Not wanting to stick around to find out "Mr. Flannery how long before you can redirect antimatter to the deflector dish" O"Connell inquired.
"Give me fifteen minutes and we'll be all set" Marcus answered eager to get going.
"Do it" the Captain ordered as Flannery left for the Lift. "Ensign Hanes turn the Ship so we're the closest we can be to the edge of the node then be ready to use reverse thrusters and back the Ship out of here when Engineering starts the antimatter stream."
"Shields up....Red Alert" Devroe called out so the entire Crew would be on their toes.
"Aye Captain, we'll be ready" Hanes replied as his hands flew over the controls "Backing the Ship into position now" as the Ship slowly started to move to it's destination.
Looking at Angel and in a low voice "This bloody hell better work" Jamie stated feeling the stress for the Ship and for her Crew.
Angel smiled "The entire Crew has faith in you Captain and so do I; so I'm sure this will work" she replied with a smile.
"Captain.....Flannery, we're all set whenever you are" Marcus stated with some confidence in his voice.
"Ok then, let her rip Lieutenant. Helm as soon as you feel the Peel starting to move hit the thrusters" came the orders.
"Aye Captain, standing bye" Helm reported. Moments later the Ship started to move as Helm engaged thrusters. Slowly the Peel started moving towards the edge of the node. Ten minutes went by that felt like an eternity until Helm called out "We're free of the node Captain."
"Warp one, for thirty seconds and get us the hell away from this thing" O'Connell ordered. Helm didn't bother to acknowledge the order and went straight to warp. The Bridge Crew let out a collective sigh of relief being free from the gravitational node.
"Full stop Helm. Lieutenant SanChez drop a couple of warning markers so some other poor unsuspecting soul doesn't get caught up in that thing" the Captain ordered.
"As you wish Sir, dropping two warning buoys now" Maria commented as she fired the buoys out into space.
" We are free of the node. Not scanning any vessels in pursuit." Sayvek reported.
"Stand down Red Alert" the Commander ordered with some relief in her voice happy that was over.
"Excellent Lieutenant" O'Connell replied then he addressed the Bridge Crew "Thank you all for your suggestions and especially for keeping a cool head the past few hours; that could have gone much worse than it did." Then redirecting "Ensign Hanes at warp eight what's our ETA to the Base."
Doing a quick calculation Jack turned facing his Captain "Sir it's a four hour ETA at warp eight" he stated awaiting the order.
"Make it happen Ensign, warp eight if you please" O'Connell confirmed with a smile getting into a little more relaxing position as the Peel went to warp.
“Sorry Captain” Sarissa gave Jamie an apologetic look. “Just being near the Borg again after so long completely terrified me.” She offered a more relaxed smile.
Jamie smiled back "No need to apologize Counselor; I couldn't even begin to imagine what that experience must have been like for you" then he paused a moment "But I have to say seeing you performing your duties you seem to have adjusted quite well."
“Thank you” Sarissa smiled warmly. “When I was learning to be me again, I had so much help from Counsellor’s and others I just wanted to help others myself. Hence one reason why I’m a Counsellor.”
< In the cargo hold below >
The large container had remained dormant through all of the excitement but the moment they exited the node something inside stirred to life and then another and another.
On the bridge Sarissa felt something odd. “Captain! Something doesn't feel right, I’m sensing something and it’s onboard ship.” she gave Jamie a concerned look.
Before O'Connell could reply his comm went off "O'Connell, go ahead" he commented wondering what the Counselor had sensed.
"Captain, this is the Cargo Chief. That container that was beamed aboard" then he paused a moment "I'm hearing sounds coming from it....somethings alive in there."
"Understood Chief, O'Connell out" then tapping his comm "Captain Hunt, O'Connell here, I need two fully armed Marines down in the Cargo Bay right away. The container we beamed aboard" pausing a moment not believing he was actually saying this "Seems to have come alive. It does have a force field around it but I don't want to take any chances" came the order.
< Deck 5 Marine Country >
"Understood Captain, I'll have two of my Marines on site fully armed in ten" John replied as he stood and left his office. Walking out he stated in a loud voice "Anderson and Parker gear up! Be at the Cargo Bay in ten and keep watch over a crate within a forcefield; reports of something may be alive in it" Hunt concluded.
< Bridge >
"Helm what's our ETA to M-69" the Captain inquired with some concern over the current situation.
Checking his screen "Forty five minutes Captain" Hanes replied.
"Good. When we're in range drop us out of warp and full stop" came the order "Counselor did you get any indication if what you were sensing was hostile or not."
Sarissa shook her head. “It’s hard to tell Captain, right now whatever they are they’re in that crate. It might change if they get out.”
"I guess we better make sure they don't get out then" O'Connell stated "Lieutenant Albo can you increase the strength of the force field in the cargo bay?"
Looking at his screens then turned facing O'Connell "Yes Captain I can increase the forceful by another thirty percent if I shut down the Holo Decks" Johan stated wondering what was going on for such a request.
"Do it Lieutenant, I want to make sure that thing holds until we can get that crate off this Ship. Johan did as ordered.
Shortly Helm called out "Captain we're approaching M-69.....dropping out of warp.....initiating full stop Sir."
A feeling of relief swept over Jamie as he turned to the Comms Officer "Hail Captain Kingston for me and send it to my Ready Room" before turning to Angel "Commander you have the Conn" just before O'Connell rose and made his way to his Office.
< Ready Room >
Grabbing a quick water Jamie sat at his desk as the Comms Officer notified him "Captain I have Kingston on the line for you Sir."
"Thank you Ensign" as Jamie activated his Terminal "Captain Kingston I have the cargo you requested; if you give me the coordinates we'll beam it directly to you" the he paused "From one Captain to another, you mind telling me what's in that crate we have aboard. We tangled with a gravitational node and what ever's inside that thing seems to have come alive."
[ Alive? Something must have activated it. Did you encounter anyone inside the node? CAPTAIN I am on my way. Do not try to beam that off of your ship. It will need to be moved manually and very slowly.] Kingston replied.
"No we didn't encounter anyone inside the node; although we did pick up a Ship on long range scanners but we never saw it" O'Connell replied "Understood Captain; I'll meet you in Transporter Room 2."
< Transporter Room 2 >
Captain O'Connell waited for Kingston to arrive when the Operator informed him "Captain, Captain Kingston is ready to transport over." Moments later Kingston materialized "Welcome aboard the Peel Captain" as Jamie walked closer extending his hand.
Terry Kingston had barely beamed up and he jumped off the platform.
" Take me to the cargo hold. I will explain as we go. The container holds an anti Borg technology. If you some how came into proximity to anything Borg it activates from its dormant station. I have the code to rehybernate it until I am.ready to deploy it on the station. Kingston replied as they walked.
"Bloody hell man" O'Connell thought to himself before replying "Yes, right this way" he then added as they walked along "Unfortunately we did come in contact with a Borg Sphere while we were trapped in a gravitational node on our return trip, but it was dead; I have no idea how long it had been trapped inside the node" he explained.
" And another vessel was heading toward the node? It was probably...a Cybrid ship. Those nodes are placed in that sector to trap Borg vessels. I would have warned you but I never expected you to be trapped in one. The slipstream drive I use resembled the Borg drive. Which is why you were captured. This is a long story. I need to get in there and shut off that box." Terry replied.
"Ok. Let me drop the forcefield around it" O'Connell stated "Computer....disable forcefield; Captain, O'Connell, Jamie, R. security clearance Theta, 7, Omicron, Zulu."
"Captain, O'Connell, Jamie, R. security clearance Theta, 7, Omicron, Zulu....Forcefield has been disabled" the Computer responded.
Turning to Kingston "All set Captain; the sooner you can get this thing off my Ship the better. Anything Borg gives me cause for concern" O'Connell replied.
Kingston paused " This is anti Borg technology Captain. But it is still dangerous. " A small work bee made its way into the hold and secured the device. When it was no longer inside the ship it slowly delivered it to its appointed area.
Kingston then beamed away from the Peel.
